Another January weekend in Aspen, Colorado

Many things in life are beyond our control. But one thing we can be in control of is our capacity to be grateful.

When moving to Glenwood Springs, Colorado in the spring of 2018, I realized there was the possibility of being a raft guide again. So I jumped at the opportunity. I found Defiance Rafting Company and little did I know that almost two and half years later it would become more than just a job. Defiance is a supporter and sponsor of the 5Point Adventure Film Festival. The 5 Points are purpose, respect, commitment, humility, and balance.

When I first attended during 2019’s 5Point Film Festival in Aspen I had no idea what type of film festival I was walking into. While the average adventure film festival has a lot of slow-motion, loud music, brand shoutouts, etc. 5Point is different. Some of the films carry the classic adventure theme while others remind you of the bigger issues that people face just to participate in adventures.

The two-night festival is a rollercoaster of emotions, from belly laughs and warm fuzzies to silence and tears. On the whole, it brought me to a happy place. It let me find and share the joy had when confronting adversity while tugging deep in my heart and bringing tears to my eyes. If I’m honest, it wasn’t always soft, Hollywood tears in my eyes. I was legit ugly crying in the balcony section watching the film Broken at the 2020 event. Like so many others in attendance, I connected to the people in the films and the stories they invited me into.

The 5Points align with how we do things at Defiance. Yes, we want to take you to the river. But only if we can do it authentically. We want to listen, engage, and share in lasting memory. Our boathouse has an open door, we accept people from all walks of life. We believe that all people are fundamentally good. And we strive to use the 5 Points in the way we give back to our community in the hopes to ignite passion in those around us.

This is what the 5Points mean to me. Purpose is something we seek. Respect is earned. Commitment is given. Humility is developed. Balance is how we distribute these things into our lives.

I’m excited for 2020 and the future of Defiance. I’m also grateful that I was able to start off my year with the 5Point Adventure Film Festival!
